Adding to home page tiles

The tiles across the top of the home page are built from tags. Content appears in a tile when the activity carries that tag, and when your users can actually reach it.

Three things have to be true

  1. The activity sits in a topic, inside a group / course.

  2. The users you want to reach are on that group.

  3. The activity carries the tile's Home section tag, and everything is published.

Miss any one of them and the tile stays empty for your staff — even when it looks correct to you as an admin.

1. Check the activity lives in a group and a topic

Content reaches people through the structure it sits in: an activity belongs to a topic, and a topic belongs to a group / course. A tag on its own does not make content reachable.

Open the course and check the Topics block, and that Status shows Published.

2. Check the right users are on that group

Open the Users tab on the course. If nobody is listed, nobody will see the content in the tile — however correct the tag is.

This is the most common reason a tile looks full to an admin and empty to everyone else.

No users on the course, the tile will be empty for staff.

3. Open the activity from its topic

Inside the topic you'll find its activities. Click the one you want in the tile — for example a recording you've just uploaded.

4. On the General tab, scroll down to Tags

Stay on the General tab and scroll to the bottom of the right-hand column. You'll find Used in topic, which confirms where the activity sits, and below it the Tags block.

Click the + on the Tags block.

5. Pick your tile under Home section

The Add tags dialog has several tag groups. The one that drives the home page is Home section. Open it and tick the tile you want.

The list scrolls. If you don't see your tile straight away, scroll down inside the list rather than assuming it isn't there.

Scrolling the Home section list reveals the rest of the tiles.

6. Save, then publish

Click Save. The tag now shows under Home section in the activity's Tags panel.

Then make sure everything is Published — the activity, its topic and its group.

Anything left as Draft stays invisible to users, no matter how it is tagged.

7. Check the tile

Go to Home and click the tile. The activity should now be listed, with its topic shown underneath it.

If something isn't showing

You can see it, your staff can't. Admins see every activity carrying the tag. A user sees it only when all of these are true:

  • the activity is Published,

  • the user is on the group the activity belongs to, and

  • the activity has not been archived.

Your tile isn't in the Home section list. The list shows only a few tags at a time and is scrollable. Scroll down inside the open list — tiles further down the alphabet are below the visible area.

The tag group may have a different name. Each workspace can rename its tag groups, so Home section may read differently for you. It is always the group that lists the names of your home page tiles.

Taking content out of a tile. Open the activity's Tags tab and click the x next to the tag. It applies immediately — there is nothing further to save.

Opening and closing dates. Dates such as "open until 2 October" are set on the activity under Activity timeframes on the General tab. They control when people can open the content, not whether it appears in a tile.
